Application Process

The Department selects two PG-1 residents a year to begin training in late June. The National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) is the matching service for Neurosurgery. The Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) is the service which packages and transmits residency applications (letters of recommendation, medical school performance evaluations, USMLE transcripts, and other supporting credentials) to our training program.

ERAS opens to applicants July 1, 2009. NRMP opens to applicants August 15, 2009. Register separately with each service. We will begin to receive applications from ERAS after September 1, 2009. Please make sure that your application includes a USMLE transcript, a medical school transcript, a Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSPE), a personal statement, and three (3) letters of recommendation. The application receipt deadline is November 15, 2008.

Interviews are arranged by invitation. Invitations are based on a review of the application material we receive through ERAS. Our department holds 4-5 interview sessions each fall. Between 9-10 resident candidates are interviewed at each session. Each session is a 1.5 day process that begins with a welcome dinner on the first evening and concludes with interviews and tours the next full day. In fall 2009, our sessions are scheduled for September 20/21, October 13/14, November 18/19 and December 10/11. A fifth session may be scheduled later, if needed.

International medical graduates
may apply to our program. The applicant will need to (1) have a currently valid ECFMG certificate, (2) register with the NRMP, (3) apply through ERAS, (4) be a US citizen or permanent resident with a green card and (5), if invited, come to Madison for an interview (see above).

Match Day is March 15, 2010. Please note: Before a matched candidate can be hired by UW Hospital in June, the resident must have ALREADY received a passing grade in USMLE Part II (CK and CS).
